DAY 4.Training Hike day! It’s cold but dry, bright and sunny 🌞. We left USU after breakfast and followed the road past a lovely little church by the lake. We soon turned off the road and followed the edge of the lake until we got close to one of the many power stations. Climbing away from the lake we had some amazing views to the glaciers on Langökull. Depending down thr far side to yet another lake, Icelands coldest!. Following the coast the path narrowed to a ledge only a few inches across, with a drop straight down to the frozen lake. We came across a really cool cave. Then climbed up and crossed open wild land, we could see a farm in the distance and headed for that. More frozen lakes and ponds, which we bravely walked across (after the Icelandics told us it was safe). We soon found the main Rd back to USU.When we got back we found out in Iceland they have a thing called “Bun Day” where they eat cream buns 😋. It was time to take down the tents. We tried, but the pegs were frozen in the ground, one of the centre staff said he had a tool for it at home so we got away with leaving them up!Log book time, then into our uniforms for “culture night”. We tried different kinds of weird foods like fermented shark and sheep head 🤢.
